Man’s Highest Good: A Heavenly Calling

Dear friends, let us gather our hearts and minds as we reflect on a truth as old as creation: God alone is man’s highest good. From the beginning, He has been the source of all life, the wellspring of every blessing, and the sustainer of all that exists. Every moment of our lives is upheld by His hand, for He is the Creator who made us in His image and calls us to something far greater than this fleeting world can offer.

Now, my brothers and sisters, let us consider this: while the animals may roam the earth with their instincts and desires, and while the plants grow and flourish without awareness, man is different. You and I are made with hearts that yearn for more than what we see and touch. We are not satisfied with mere earthly pleasures or treasures. No, deep within us is a longing for the eternal, a hunger for the spiritual, and a thirst for the divine.

Though sin has marred the image of God in us, it has not erased it. There remains in every human soul a spark of that original glory—a reminder of our heavenly calling. We may chase after worldly goods, knowledge, or even the beauty of art and culture, but none of these can fill the void in our hearts. Why? because our souls were created for something higher, something eternal.

Let me tell you plainly: science may expand our understanding, art may lift our spirits, and acts of kindness may bring us joy. But none of these can offer the ultimate rest our hearts crave. Yes, they are gifts from God, but they are not Himself. They point us to Him, the one who is truth, beauty, and goodness in their purest form.

And so, dear friends, we must turn our eyes upward. As Ecclesiastes reminds us, God has placed eternity in our hearts (3:11). This world and all its splendor are but shadows of the greater reality found in Him. Even as we labor, love, and learn here on earth, remember these things are temporary. Only in God can we find an unchanging and everlasting good.

The great Saint Augustine said it best: “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” So let us not seek our fulfillment in wealth or fame or even in noble pursuits like knowledge or charity if they are apart from God. Instead, let us seek Him who is near to all who call upon Him with humble hearts (Psalm 145:18).

Beloved, the highest good is not found below but above; not in things but in Him who made all things. May we fix our eyes on Jesus, the author, and finisher of our faith, and find in Him the peace and joy that nothing in this world can take away. Amen.
