Christ, The Only Way

JOHN 14:6
“I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

Beloved, I want to speak to you today about a truth that stands at the very heart of our faith: that Christ is the only way to God. In the verse before us, the Lord Jesus tells His disciples, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man comes to the Father but by me.” There’s no other road, no other door, no other hope but Jesus.

Now, if you look back just a bit in your Bibles, you’ll see that Jesus had been telling His disciples He was soon to leave them. This troubled their hearts, as it would trouble any of us to lose someone so dear. But Jesus, knowing their sorrow, speaks words of comfort: “Let not your hearts be troubled.” He tells them that His leaving is not the end, but the beginning of something greater. He goes to prepare a place for them, and for all who believe.

But Thomas, honest as ever, says, “Lord, we don’t know where you’re going, so how can we know the way?” And Jesus answers with those precious words: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Not just a way, not just a truth, not just a life—the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except by Him.

Let’s take a closer look at what this means for us.

First:

Christ is the way from where we are to where we need to be. Every road, every path, leads from one place to another. And Jesus is the road that leads us out of our old life—out of sin and out of God’s wrath—into the grace and glory of the Father.

Now, what is this old state we’re leaving behind? It’s a state of sin, and it’s a state of guilt. We’re all born with it, and we all carry it, whether we know it or not. And what is the place we’re heading to? It’s the loving arms of God, it’s forgiveness, it’s new life, it’s heaven itself.

Second:

Christ is the way out of the guilt of sin. You see, friends, none of us can stand before God on our own. Our good deeds, even the best of them, can’t wash away the stains of our sin. The law can’t do it, our own hearts can’t do it, not even the angels in heaven could do it for us. Only Jesus, by His sacrifice, can take away our guilt. He bore our sins on the cross, and when we trust in Him, God no longer sees our faults—He sees us covered in Christ’s righteousness.

It’s just as the Scriptures say: “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” Christ’s blood cleanses us from all sin. He doesn’t just cover up our sins; He carries them away, as far as the east is from the west. If you belong to Christ, there is no sin left on your record. You are free.

Third:

Some folks might say, “But don’t believers still sin?” Yes, we do. We stumble and fall every day. But here’s the good news: though we sin, God does not count those sins against us. Christ has paid the debt in full. Our sins are laid on Him, and His righteousness is laid on us.

Imagine a man who owes a great debt, but another comes and pays it all. That debt is gone. So it is with us and Christ. He has paid it all.

Fourth:

Christ is not only the way out of the guilt of sin, but also out of the power of sin. Sin used to rule over us like a cruel master, but when Christ comes into our lives, He breaks that power. We may still struggle, we may still feel its pull, but sin no longer reigns over us. Christ gives us strength to fight, and He promises that He will finish the work He began in us.

Sometimes, the battle is hard, and we feel the weight of temptation. But Jesus is faithful. He will not let us be tempted beyond what we can bear, and He always provides a way of escape.

Fifth:

Let me say this plainly: our peace with God does not come from how well we fight our sins, or how holy we feel. It comes from Christ alone. If you look for peace anywhere else—in your own goodness, in your own efforts—you will never find it. Christ is the fountain of living waters. Come to Him, and He will give you rest.

Lastly:

All this is by God’s grace alone. He saves us, not because we are good, but because He is good. Not because we deserve it, but because He loves us. “Not for your sake do I do this,” says the Lord, “but for my own name’s sake.” It is His mercy, freely given, that saves us.

So, dear friends, let us hold fast to this truth: Christ is the only way. If you have not yet come to Him, come today. There is nothing in your past, no sin, no failure, that can keep you from Him if you will only come. And if you have come, rest in Him. Your sins are forgiven, your debt is paid, your future is secure. Christ is your way, your truth, and your life.

Amen.
