ToggleReflecting on God’s Kindness
Isaiah 63:7
“I will recount the steadfast love of the Lord, the praises of the Lord, according to all that the Lord has granted us, and the great goodness to the house of Israel that he has granted them according to his compassion, according to the abundance of his steadfast love.”
Have you ever had one of those moments where you just pause and realize how much God has done for you? That’s what the prophet Isaiah was feeling in this verse. He’d been thinking about God’s justice, but then his heart turned to God’s great kindness—how He rescued Israel from slavery, led them through the wilderness, and never stopped loving them. Isaiah couldn’t help but praise God for His “steadfast love.”
God’s Everyday Mercies
We have so many reasons to talk about the tender mercies of the Lord. God gives us life and sustains us every day. He provides food, clothing, shelter, and the blessing of friends and family. Every good thing in our lives is a gift from Him.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights…”
—James 1:17
God’s mercies are more than we can count. He protects us from dangers we see and many we never notice. The pleasures of life, the beauty of nature, the comfort of friendship—all come from His generous hand.
The Greatest Mercy: Redeeming Grace
But above all, God shows us His mercy through redeeming grace—the grace that saves us from our sins through Jesus Christ. Isaiah was amazed at God’s rescue of Israel, but we have even more reason to rejoice because we know Jesus, who gave His life for us.
“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
—Romans 5:8
God planned our salvation before we were born. No one had to convince Him to love us—He loved us first, even before we could ask. His love is completely selfless and pure.
Charles Spurgeon once said,
“God’s mercy is so great that you may sooner drain the sea of its water, or deprive the sun of its light, or make space too narrow, than diminish the great mercy of God.”
God’s Love Comes Down
Consider this: God’s love came down to us, even though we are so small compared to Him. He is the King of kings, but He cares for each of us.
“What is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?”
—Psalm 8:4
His love is even more amazing because He loved us while we were still His enemies, and He sent Jesus to die for us.
Jesus, the Son of God, left the glory of heaven to be born as a man. He lived a humble life, suffered, and died on the cross—all for us.
“Who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”
—Philippians 2:6-8
What greater love could there be?
The Daily Kindness of Jesus
God’s mercy isn’t just seen in the big things but in the patience and kindness He shows us daily. He calls us His friends, His children, even His bride. Our Savior forgives us again and again, and He walks with us through every trial.
“As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.”
—Psalm 103:13-14
Our Heavenly Father gives us the Sabbath to rest, the Lord’s Supper to remember Him, and His Word to guide and comfort us. Opening the Bible, we find God’s love written on every page.
“For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”
—Romans 15:4
John Owen, a faithful Puritan, wrote,
“The greatest sorrow and burden you can lay on the Father, the greatest unkindness you can do to Him is not to believe that He loves you.”
God’s Faithfulness Through History
Throughout history, God has always cared for His people. He saved Noah from the flood, protected Abraham, delivered Israel from Egypt, and has built His Church through the ages. Even now, He is working for our good and will one day fill the whole earth with His glory.
And here’s something special: God’s grace is offered freely to everyone.
“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.”
—Isaiah 55:1
God’s mercy is abundant and free.
Our Response to God’s Mercy
So, what should we do in response? Let’s be filled with wonder and gratitude. Remember God’s mercies daily and thank Him for all He’s done. Let’s love Him—not just for what He gives us, but for who He is. Let’s trust Him with our lives, worship Him sincerely, and live for Him by loving others as He has loved us.
So, let’s be humble, remembering that we have often failed Him, but He never fails us. Let’s hold tightly to Jesus, knowing that His blood makes us clean, no matter how deep our sin; His mercy is more profound still.
“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.”
—Isaiah 1:18
If you haven’t trusted in Jesus yet, I urge you: don’t turn away from such love. God’s mercy is waiting for you. Let His kindness lead you to repentance and new life.
Closing: God’s Love Endures Forever
Let’s close with these words from the Psalms:
“But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments.”
—Psalm 103:17-18
If you’d like to reflect more on God’s loving kindness, I encourage you to read Psalm 103. Its words perfectly capture the joy and gratitude we feel for our merciful God.
May we always remember and rejoice in the tender mercies of our God.
